When commuting on the train frequently to the city for no real purpose, I used to observe how people would look at each other, then when you were caught looking at someone you’d quickly look away. That’s the chorus, but as my imagination ran away with me and had time to look out the window and disengage from reality, I came up with the story of the train espionage spy movie theme. Like murder on the Orient Express. With me being the central character, the irony being spy agencies are following people but some don’t know the other agencies are following them hence the lyric ‘no one knows who’s following who’. The title ‘Fast train to nowhere’ came as I got off at Flinders St Station and realised I am going nowhere.
